Question 1 of 8 About 60 seconds

01

You stop buying electricity you're making yourself

Every unit your panels make and you use is a unit you don’t buy at 26p. This is where most of the saving comes from – not from selling it.

02

You sell what you don't use

Whatever you don’t use goes back to the grid and your supplier pays you for it. It isn’t a fortune. It adds up quietly in the background.

03

A battery moves the saving to when you need it

Usually the difference between using about a third of what you make and around three quarters. Is a battery worth it?

Panels make most of their power at lunchtime. Most homes use most of theirs around 6pm. Nearly everything else follows from that.

The simple version

Three ways it puts money back

Your panels Your home The grid pays you for it Battery 6pm, lights on

Anyone showing you a saving based on that number is either being careless or hoping you don’t check. Without a battery, most homes use around a third of what they generate.

We’ll tell you if your roof isn’t right for it. We’ve talked people out of solar before and we’ll do it again.

Anyone promising you four is quoting a best case they can’t guarantee. Panels also lose about half a percent of their output every year, and that belongs in the maths.
